  • Notes
    • Extensive history of Thomas Stebbins is available in volume 1 of The Stebbins Genealogy (1904). The following are some selected facts:

Roland Stebbins was b. about 1594, probably in or near Stebbing, Essex County, England; d. 14 Dec 1671 in Northampton, Mass. Rowland m. Sara Whiting, b. 1591 in England, d. Oct 1649; she was buried in Springfield, Mass.

Roland and his wife took and oath of allegiance and signed to rtavel to America in April 1634 in the "Francis, of Ipswich," Mr. John Cutting, Capt. Also on the ship were with Rowland were Thomas Stebing, age 14; Sarah Stebing, age 11; Eliz. Stebing, age 6; John Stebing, age 8; and Mary Winche, age 15. However, the ship did not depart port until 12 Nov 1634. They probably landed at Boston, and settled in Roxbury, Mass. in late 1634 or early 1635. Rowland was one of the founders of Agawam (now Springfield), Mass., in 1636, but shortly after signing the deed for the Agawam Indian land, war broke out with the Pequot. Rowland and his family did not move to Springfield until 1639.
