      Mal Bellairs

      Obituary

WOODSTOCK ? Mal Bellairs, 90, a well-known Chicagoland radio personality, died peacefully of natural causes at home Monday, July 12, 2010.
He was born in 1919 in Cheyenne, Wyo., and spent his early years on a cattle ranch in Colorado. He later attended the Pasadena Playhouse in California to study acting. He moved to Chicago in the late 1930s. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he married Josephine Elizabeth Morrissy and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was commissioned as an officer and served in post war Japan.
After the war, he and his wife returned to Chicago, where he began his 50-year legendary broadcasting career, and to raise their family. He worked at WBBM from 1955-69, hosting programs such as Lucky Ladies, Music Wagon and his annual holiday special featuring the music of Christmas from around the world.
In 1969, he moved the family from Wilmette to Woodstock where they bought the AM radio station (WIVS) in Crystal Lake, and a few years later the FM station (WXRD) in Woodstock. It was a family-run business with many of the children working alongside their parents and learning the trade.
After the death of his beloved first wife, he was fortunate enough to meet Maria Henslee, fall deeply in love for the second time, marry and bring their two families together. In 1982, after selling the two radio stations, he started to ease out of daily operations giving he and his wife more time to pursue the things they enjoyed, including family, friends, cooking, bridge and travel, especially to Liscrona, their gray stone manor house in Ireland.
He still is remembered for his recognizable voice and masterful way with words. In 2009, he received the Broadcast Pioneer award from the Illinois Broadcasters' Association. He was a proud member of AFTRA, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Maria; and his children, Keith (Judy) Bellairs of Guelph, Canada, Jerry (Vivian) Bellairs of Daytona, Fla., Pat Bellairs of Lexington, Ky., Kim (Neal) Esterly of San Diego, Rick (Ellen M.) Bellairs of Woodstock, Jeff (Ellen E.) Bellairs of Minnetonka, Minn., Chris (Jeannie) Bellairs of Dallas, Edward (Sally) Henslee of Crystal Lake, Ann Henslee of Woodstock and Sue Samet of The Dalles, Ore.; many grandchildren, David and Bryan Esterly, Edward, Nick and Maria Samet, Vivian Willis and Mason Bellairs, Brennan and Tessa Jania, Joseph, Matt, Stacie and Malcolm Bellairs, Nigel and Graham Bellairs, Mallory and Jade Bellairs, Kelly Hallam, Rob Leana and Shannon Taylor. He truly loved his large, extended family, whose time together was filled with fun and laughter.
A gathering of relatives and friends will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock. The gathering will continue from 10 a.m. Thursday, July 15, until the funeral Mass is celebrated at 11 a.m., at St. Mary Episcopal Church, 210 S. McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Woodstock. Military Honors will be provided by the Woodstock Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5040.
